A glimpse of our history

The center “Rayito de Luz” (Little Sunshine) was born 16 years ago with the desire to provide a holistic relief with special emphasis on children born in poverty. As the years passed by the same services were extended to other neighborhoods in the city of Resistencia, Chaco; reaching a total of 5 centers today. These centers offer a balanced meal per day and in some cases breakfast or snacks; this effort helps to alleviate the high levels of malnourishment in the city, one of the highest in the country.

Furthermore, these efforts also reach young people, adults and older people most of them relatives of the children assisted at the center. These centers enjoy the recognition of the provincial government by means of sponsoring the meals given to more than 480 children. The centers also receive help from some churches and people who generously donate groceries, clothing, and financial support.

Lately, however, the resources to run the feeding program and other activities are not enough to reach out to a greater number of children and their families. Years back when we had more resources we were able to offer scholarships for the children, special one-day retreats, assistance for the families, and house to house visitation to train the mothers on matters such as hygiene and healthcare. These activities are not being offered at the present time for lack of resources.

All the centers count with people trained to help the children and their families in their spiritual and emotional needs. Recently, older people are starting to attend in greater number, specially those who do not have of means of subsistence. These elderly people, just like the children, get their single daily meal at the center. Besides children and the elderly many other people get help from the center, such as people with mental problems and people dealing with alcoholism. The feeding program operates with the help of volunteers who prepare the meals and snacks.

The greater Resistencia area, where most of the centers of the Deshumi Foundation are located, was classified by the government as the most important poverty pocket of the country.
